How can I tell if a sword is quality or shit? Tomarrow I am going to a flee market with the intent of purchasing a few swords. (This flee market has tons of sword dealers).
How can I tell if a sword is high or poor quality? I would like a sword that is battle ready. The swords wont really do anything besides hang on my wall, but if I'm spending the money I want quality swords.
The swords there are cheap. You can get them for anywhere from 10-300 dollars. Obviously I know the more I spend the better it will be. I also don't really trust the dealers because its a flee market and they will tell me what I want to hear to get it sold.
thanks for anyone who helps
I'm looking at katanas more then anything. mopar power replied: "Well if it has a imprinted stamp at the bottom of the blade that reads 440 stainless it's definetly something,if it's stamped Pakistan,it's junk."
halorocko replied: "well just check the sword out u know like jsut examine it and stuff ask like if it was used which i hope it wouldnt hav been ummmm ask if they kept it in good condition and also ask when they bought and for how long they ve had it for ok so ummmmm ya hope i helped"
wartz replied: "What is a flee market and how many knights are roving about in your neighborhood? (Flee from the knights, scratch the fleas)"
Pustic replied: "If you want a sword that's battle ready, the flea market is not the place to go. You answered your own question when you said that the swords there are cheap. Most of them are for show , not go.
Try Budk.com and see what they have."
morpheus replied: "Traditional Japanese swords were created from different types of steel that were folded, heated and pounded numerous times. This was to combine the different "hardness" of metals in order to keep the sharpness of a hard blade, but resist breakage like a softer one. Swords like these go for thousands of dollars.
If you would just like a "battle-ready" sword, look for one that is made of high-carbon spring steel that is tempered -this simply means that it is heated and cooled to be somewhat flexible, yet strong. Ask the seller if the swords are high-carbon tempered steel, and if could prove it. He simply needs to hold one end of the blade in one hand and the handle in the other. When -and if he is willing- to bend the blade down about 3-4 inches, it should spring back immediately to its original shape upon release. If the blade does not bend, it is too hard and brittle to be used for battle. If the seller is reluctant because he knows the blade will not spring back, then it is not tempered and is therefore not suitable for battle.
Remember that any battle-ready blade has a high carbon content and is very susceptible to rust. Be sure to keep it well oiled and away from moisture and dust -in other words clean it often. Do not keep it in it's scabbard; moisture gets trapped inside and will corrode your sword.
Swords such as these will run in the hundreds of dollars. Hope that helps."
ChargerIIC replied: "The basic answers is that usually anything under $100 is most likely carbon steel (also called buttersteel to swordfighters) and wil chink horribly when used. The best way is to ask the seller what kind of steel was used, stainless or spring steel is usually battle ready. If you want a cheap starting sword, carbon steel is still an option, but make certain the weapon is a full tang. This means the blade extends all the way to the pommel of the weapon. Anything less runs the risk of snapping in a spetacular fashion on the field. Unfortunatly you have to rely a lot on the seller's honesty when buying a blade." How do you craft your own sword in the game Dark Messiah? I put the brick in the fire and crafted the shape of the sword. Then put it in the water. Then into the fire. When I try to bring it to the sword making tool it says that this sword is not ready to complete. Zako replied: "use the force"
Panacea replied: "http://adlog.com.com/adlog/c/r=7807&s=692046&t=-1&o=1:&h=cn&p=2&b=1&l=en_US&&site=1/http://www.gamespot.com/misc/gameguides_download.html?guide=darkmessiah.pdf&tag=gs_ggdl_darkmessiah&sid=6160460&promo=1
Here is a walkthrough for the game. It's in pdf format so you need adobe acrobat to view it.
The way you make a sword is you put the brick in the pot. Then you move the pot over the fire. Pump the bellows a few times. Then move the pot over the mold. After it pours in the mold, flip the switch to fill it with water. This creates a blade. Get the blade. Then walk directly to the fire and put the blade in there. Watch the blade. When it turns red, it is ready. Take the blade out of the fire and put it on the anvil. Take the smith hammer and equip it as a weapon. Hit the blade until it says it is done. Pick up the blade again and put it inside the handle making tool. The finished sword will pop up next to the handle making tool and can be picked up now.
Steel makes a longsword. Flamegold makes an Earthfire sword (far more powerful). Note that undead are not vulnerable to fire as they are in other games. The superior naga silk sword is more powerfula against them than the earthfire sword. Earthfire sword kicks the crap out of humans and spiders though (so does the staff of the firelord). If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you find those weapons later in the game. Oh yeah, you won't find a flamegold bar until later in the game. When you do, hold on to it. Another smithy will be coming up." Does a sword plant have to be completely underwater to grow? ...Or can the bulk of the plant be in the water and the leaves sticking out? I have been told that if the WHOLE plant is not in the water that it will die BUT I cannot find any plant site that says that. I have a Sword Plant that I have in a glass bowl with gravel and 5/6 of the plant is completely under water but the leaves are sticking out...will it die? kanna replied: "i don't know correctly.you may try finding info at monrovia.com."
Leslie T replied: "I know exactly what you are talking about, years ago we could buy Amazon swords that were beautiful submerged aquarium plants, then about 20 years ago everything I bought wanted to
reach up out of the water, I believe they were the "Radicans" variety (a little different leaf) I now grow a plant called "Water Plantain" that looks just like the amazon sword except it is a bog plant with roots underwater and leaves out, I suspect that alot of the plants people are now buying are this, probably because its
native to US and probably cheaper ( I grow mine outside in my pond) You know alot of the plants that are sold as aquarium plants aren't, they are simply plants that can survive for a while underwater" What is the best way to create a sword for stage sword Fighting? A friend and i were wanting to have a stage battle. But we need swords. We want to avoid buying them. What's a cheap and easy way to Create a sturdy, durable stage fighting sword? replied: "I used to use sticks when I was about 10... try that?" How do fencing coaches choose a sword for you? I am soon going to pick up fencing and I am wondering how do coaches pick a sword for you during training. Obviously, there are only three swords to choose from, but how do they pick for you? Is it by speed, reflexes, or something? Thanks in advance for the answers. Everyone else is crazy...but me! replied: "You choose which style of fencing you want to do, foil, epee, or sabre, and then the choice is made. If, after a few lessons, your maestro sees that you are more suited for a different weapon/style than the one you initially chose, then he will guide you into that one. If not, then you are in your style until YOU decide to change it.
In PSAL H.S. fencing, the only weapon competed in is foil; tournaments offer all three. [Not sure about collegiate-level fencing.)" What was the biggest type of sword ever used in actual combat? Was it the Great Sword (Zweihnder type)?
How common would it have been to actually seen swords this big being used in combat- and what technique was used with them? Was there any swordsmanship involved or was it simply a case of swinging it over your head like a beserker?
Thanks! Adam S replied: "The really huge 2 handers were generally used to chop the heads off of pikes according to the history channel."
Woah Limahl replied: "Here's your info...seems 2 handed, 3.5 lbs about 175 cm could be used against pikes and still be moved quite effectively for man to man combat, provided you had the technique sorted!"
Dex replied: "There is a type of idnian/pakistani sword that is flexible and is the size of a normal sword with the tip rolled up but as you swing it is unrolls into a really long sharp tongue - called an urumi.
This part of India was never conquered and this type of sword was banned from duels.
It's not the beefiest sword, but in terms of length it can roll out to well over 6'.
The longest practical conventional sword is the 6' claymore."
william d replied: "Probably one like Wallace used.It can still be seen on display inside the monument. It is over 700 years old."
x_chipko_x replied: "I think it's the Scottish Claymore, which was routinely over 1.4 metres in length and weighed in at a little over 2.5kg."
vadaptre replied: "Sire Guilame de Walleis wielded a great double handed battle sword..its length was almost his height (6 foot)..it would have weighed probably 5lbs or so but perfectly balanced. In the medaeval battlefield perfect for close quarters slashing and hacking and swirling in arcs around the body, a ring of steel for defence. We perhaps forget that the mediaeval warriors were trained at a young age to wield these weapons and were suitably prodigiously muscularly developed in the upper arm. The archers for example at Agincourt although averaging 5'6 in height or less had bows with draw strengths of 120lbs or more and the huge strength to fire at least 300 yards. It is told that at the battle of Senlac ridge in 1066 our anglo saxon forbears could swing their massive axes so to cleave a knight in his armour and his horse in two.
The Bruis at Bannockburn on the eve of battle cleaved de Boon 'from knave to chaplet' rising from the saddle of his palfrey to a mighty English warhorse as it flew past, lance askew. Their were some mighty skilled men in those days!"
isis1037 replied: "I believe it may have been the large two sided broadsword.
It took both hands to wield it, which is why the horses of these knights were trained to respond to knee pressures. These were the battle horses, trained in Spain, originally for the Romans, and adopted by the Medieval knights [the ones with money enough to afford them]. The horses would fight right along with the knights, biting, and kicking the enemy during a battle and respond to the knee pressure of the knight with out using the reigns. This way the warrior could use broadsword, mace, pike, shield and any other arms available.
[these horses are now housed in Austria and called 'Lipizzans'.
Although shown in films as being 'swung over the head' by a berserker [ie: viking], they usually used a double bladed war axe as their primary weapon."
The Mechanic replied: "The Broadsword was the longest and heaviest used by knights , To get through the armour of other knights , if it didn't cut through the amour the blow was so powerful it often knocked a knight out. In Saladin's army they had a sword with a sliding weight that increased the force of the blow but that was lighter than the broadsword.the Zweihander was a chopping sword that depended on sheer weight to disable an opponent ,(BIT LIKE A SAXON WAR AXE) Depending on were it was manufactured was mostly lighter than the broadsword."
chris s replied: "Certainly the broadsword has its fans and was no doubt very scary and effective when used by a well trained soldier/knight. However I would argue that the greatest (not biggest) sword in history was the Roman Gladius - the sword that built an empire. Short, sharp and easy to carry and use, which is more than can be said for the larger broadsword. Just imagine having to fight from dawn til dusk, ten swings of a broadsword would be enough to tire all but the fittest, who might manage 20-30 swings, but after that they would be too tired to fight. Whereas the short Gladius can kill with very little effort on the part of the wielder.
Mention must also be made of the 16th and 17th century Japanese Samurai swords, which are the peak of the craft - lightweight, razor-sharp and extremely deadly in the right hands."
DesB3rd replied: "Zweihnder & Greatsword are two different phenomina, the latter normally used to describe hand-and-a-half swords.
In terms of battlefield weapons the Zweihnder can be taken as the longest type of sword that saw much use. The weapon indeed has a highly specialised technique connected with its use; while it can be swung "full blade" to produce a heavy cutting blow the wielder may also grasp the blade ahead of the primary hilt (hence the small secondary "quillons" 12" or so up the blade) and use the sword as a short, nimble polearm with a reach akin to other swords. Usage technique was also highly flexiable, the pommel & hilt might be used to punch at close quarters while the whole sword could be reversed and the hilt used in hooking & tripping manouvres.
Though not really at their best duelling with lighter & nimbler blades such large swords were formidable vs. polearms & armoured opponents."
seerdet replied: "The medieval german landsknecht and highland scots used twohanded swords as long as 6ft in length- very slow and unwieldy on the retract stroke, if the first blow didnt connect the other could easily get in with a counterstroke - particularly as twohanded swords preclude the use of a shield. it is notable that scot highlanders changed to a shorter singlehanded broadsword and shield"
roostermanforever replied: "no it was the scotish sword nicknamed the andy claymore,at least 6ft in lenghth"
Willie W replied: "Nobody mentioned the Odachi, which was actually banned in Japan for being too powerful, able to cut a horse in half if used correctly...Japanese sword smiths still forge them occasionally as proof of their skill....vary in size usually from 5 to 6 ft long from tip to hilt" How to call a sword of Damocles when it is no longer hanged over someones head? This is all being done on my desk top on edit drawings. How can I take a sword from a seperate picture and put it in another picture showing someone hold a sword at the angle I want?Is it to complicated? futurefamos replied: "Good question, I've heard that you can use photo proggram, it costs like20 dollars"
_ replied: "you can try manipulating both images together, they would be best to be the same format and resolution to be compatible, have the sword on a two dimensional angle can be done by rotating and transforming angles, may need to use something else if its meant to be three dimensional, if you have photoshop or paintshop pro those will do , open both images, select with lasso and copy, then paste onto other image in new layer, move, adjust , zoom in and clean edges, rotate, and save file, then save copy as jpg,
GIMP - Win install

You may have bought very young males who sprouted their swords after you purchased them.
You may have bought very old females who tend to develop a gonpodium and even a small sword.
These links will give you more info. I'd say you bought "late bloomers" thinking they were female.
